EOSC 525 · Magmatic Ore Deposits

Magmatic ore deposits and associated ore-forming systems with a focus on the petrology and geochemistry of mineralized intrusions and volcanic rocks. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

Learning Goals

By the end the course, students should be able to:

1. Identify the appropriate crustal environment (age, composition, tectonics) and magma chemistry required for the formation of magmatic ore deposits.

2. Use petrologic and geochemical data to assess the origin of textures of mineralized (sulphide or oxide) samples and the significance of variations in metal concentrations, solubility, and saturation mechanisms in mafic-ultramafic magmas.

3. Evaluate the dynamics of magma emplacement in the crust and relationship to ore-forming systems.
