Distribution of elements and isotopes in Earth systems with emphasis on the use abundances and isotopic ratios in defining the source and evolution of igneous rocks, the interaction between different reservoirs (mantle, crust and atmosphere) and the role of tectonic settings.

Geochemical constraints on mantle plume dynamics and structure.

  • Hawaii mantle plume: geochemistry and mantle structure implications (i.e. LLSVP, ULVZ connection).
  • What, when, where, and why of secondary Hawaiian hotspot volcanism – implications for plume structure and worldwide comparison; Kauai geology and geochemistry; what triggers all the changes in the Hawaii mantle plume characteristics (flux, composition, source)?
  • Isotopic systematics of the Hawaiian Ridge; Hawaii hotspot track over 45 Ma, when did the Loa component appear and what is the cause of the steep increase in magma flux.
  • Time-integrated geochemical and isotopic studies of stratigraphic volcanic series on the Kerguelen Archipelago: modeling of the plume activity, characterization of the enriched component (EM-I) and implications for deep mantle anomalous velocity zones.
  • Ninetyeast Ridge revisited: high-precision Sr, Nd, Pb and Hf isotopic systematics; new samples from IODP expedition 362.
  • Deep drilling on oceanic plateaus and submarine ridges: the Kerguelen Plateau, Broken Ridge and Ninetyeast Ridge, Walvis Ridge: IODP proposals.

Arc Volcanism.

  • Evolution of magmatism at the end of an arc: Northern Cascade Arc and Cordilleran Volcanic Province.
  • Determining magma sources in the High Cascades.

Environmental applications.

  • Exploration of Pacific Salmon’s Ocean Life and anthropogenic impact (trace metals and Pb isotopes).
  • Trace metal and Pb isotopic compositions of honey from beehives of the greater Vancouver area (see
  • Reconstructing the history of Pb pollution in the Vancouver area, through a systematic study of Pb isotopes in fallen trees from Stanley Park and sediments off the coast of Vancouver Island.
  • Biogeochemical cycle of Si in temperate forest ecosystems and the tracing of pedogenic processes.
  • Reconstructing First Nations population movements.
  • Tracing the sources of Nd in the Arctic Ocean.

Analytical applications.

  • Active participation in technique developments, instrument set-ups and international reference material characterization, including for laser-ablation and geochronological applications.
  • Oxide formation at the ICP-MS interface.
  • R&D with Nu Instruments Ltd., UK: matrix effects, Nd and Fe isotopic analyses.
